Care and Maintenance

Taking care of your new hardwood floor is a simple process if you follow these steps.

Cleaning your Hardwood Floor

  • First sweep or vacuum your hardwood floor.
  • If you decide to vacuum your floor, make sure your vacuum attachment is safe for hardwood.
  • Apply some hardwood floor cleaner to a dedicated mop used only for your hardwood floor cleaning sessions.
  • Apply the mop to the hardwood for cleaning.
  • After cleaning one room, inspect the mop for dirt. If necessary, replace the dirty terry cloth with a clean one. This is done to avoid streaking of the hardwood after cleaning.
  • Cleaning should be done periodically to avoid dirt and dust buildup which can dull the finish of your hardwood floor.

Avoiding scratches to your new hardwood floor

  • The best way to prevent scratching the finish of your hardwood is to invest in felt pad protectors. These pads are installed under the legs of all furniture that is sitting on your hardwood floor.
  • You should periodically inspect these pads and replace if necessary.
  • For heavier furniture, use caster cups made specifically for hardwood floors.
  • Do not wear high heeled shoes on your hardwood floor.
  • Avoid dragging furniture across your floor.
  • Use runners and area rugs on heavy traffic areas to avoid excessive wear.
  • There are touch up kits available for any scratches that do occur.

Humidity levels

  • Uncontrolled humidity in a home with a hardwood floor will cause dimensional changes to the individual floor boards.
  • If the humidity is too high (usually occurring in the summer months), floor boards can expand and warp.
  • Too low of a humidity level cause floor boards to shrink creating gaps between floor boards.
  • Keeping the humidity level consistent in the home throughout the year is key to keeping a healthy hardwood floor. Ideal humidity levels in the home for hardwood floors is between 40% – 50%.
  • Use a humidifier in the winter months and a dehumidifier in the summer to maintain these ideal levels. To measure the humidity levels in the home, use a hygrometer.
